Pokerwork (or pyrography meaning writing with fire) is a decorative technique dating back hundreds if not thousands of years. It is practiced using a metal implement heated in a fire and pressed against wood to make patterns or drawings. It became very popular in the Victorian era being found on boxes and items of furniture.
