Hall chairs were an important feature of 18th and 19th century country houses. Located in the halls and corridors for use by strangers waiting on business or servants. They were often made in mahogany and featured the crest and coat of arms of the family. The first illustration is of early 19th century hall chairs made by renowned furniture maker George Smith (c1786-1826). The two chairs in the second illustration are mid 19th century examples.
